Homemade Pizza Dough Using a Bread Machine

January 8, 2015 Amy 4 Comments

The smell of homemade pizza dough from a bread machine is heavenly.

When I was growing up, I lived in a small town. There were less than 5,000 who lived in town. There was only one pizza place you could get pizza. It didn’t even open up until I was in 1st or 2nd grade. I always remembered the smell of fresh dough and baking pizza as soon as you opened the door. I loved that place and it is still my favorite pizza.

We all love pizza. Pizza dough is so easy to make in a bread machine. My bread machine is pretty old. I have had it forever and it still works. I love it has a just a dough setting. I use it mainly to make dough more than actually make bread these days, since I don’t like the shape of the loaf of bread it makes. They still make this model Oster Breadmaker. I would highly recommend this one as a good investment, since mine has lasted for over 12 years and still looks the same.

This recipe came from the book provided with the bread machine. I still use it, but I have made a few modifications to make the best tasting homemade pizza dough.

Easy Homemade Pizza Dough

Homemade Bread Machine Pizza Dough

Ingredients for homemade pizza dough

This is for the 2 pound loaf or two 12 inch pizzas in the bread machine

Start with all the ingredients at room temperature

Ingredients for Homemade pizza dough

3/4 teaspoon salt

2 cups whole wheat flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill, Organic, Whole Wheat Flour)

2 cups whole wheat pastry flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill – Organic Whole Wheat Pastry Flour)

1 3/8 cup water (make sure this is at room temp, you may need to heat up a bit during winter)

1 packet of yeast

1 tablespoon Italian seasonings

1/2 teaspoon garlic

3 tablespoons of olive oil

Directions for bread machine pizza dough

1. First measure all the ingredients. I like to mix the whole wheat flour with the pastry flour in equal parts. I find mixing two whole wheat flours makes a smoother dough to work with.

2. Next combine all the ingredients according to your bread machines directions add the seasoning and garlic last. These are my secret ingredients to make the best tasting homemade pizza dough.

3. Hit the dough setting on your bread machine. Seriously it is that easy. I love this!

4. Once the pizza dough it complete, let the dough rise for one more hour and it is done. It will look more round and puffy when it comes out. I just was really excited and reached my hand in there to pull it out before I took the picture. So those are my little finger indentations on the picture above.

5. Divide pizza dough into two equal portions, flour a surface well and roll out each pizza dough ball to about 12 inches. Place on a pizza stone and poke with a few holes using a fork. Spread some sauce over the top, add cheese and toppings of your choice. Cook in a 400 degree oven for about 15 – 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly.

Can you freeze pizza dough?

For a great freezer cooking idea, I like to freeze my dough for later. Right after the dough has finished in the bread machine, I use a scale and weigh out two equal portions. Place the dough in a bag and freeze. When it is time to thaw, simply bring out the dough and set in a warm place for about an hour. This is the final rising process and should double again in size. Then you can complete step five to make pizza. Sometimes I will make two to three batches in a day and place the dough in the freezer. Then I have pizza dough ready for any night we want pizza.

Quick tip: To get the dough to thaw and rise faster. Turn on your oven to the lowest setting and allow the oven to warm up. Once the oven is warm, turn it OFF. Place dough in the oven for 30 minutes for a quick thaw and final rise.
