How to Walk 45 Minutes a Day Without Even Trying

January 6, 2016 Amy Leave a Comment

It is a new year and I have new goals. I bet you do too. One really important goal for me this year is to walk 10,000 steps a day. I know that sounds like a lot, but it is the recommended amount of steps to walk to stay fit. One way to keep track of all those steps is with a FitBit (affiliate link). I wear mine every single day. It comes with a free app for your mobile phone to sync your progress throughout the day via Bluetooth. There are many other activity trackers out there you can try, but I recommend the FitBit.

Why the Fitbit App is Great

Keeping track of how much you walk each day is easy. All you need to do is look at your phone to see how many steps you have taken. It is estimated we look at our phones about 150 times a day. It is easy to see how many steps you have taken through out the day. I like to set small goals for myself to make sure I reach my goal everyday. One way is to have 5,000 steps in by noon. I know that seems crazy, but it can be done. One of the best features with the FitBit app, is adding friends.

Both my husband and I each have this FitBit. My daughter got the FitBit Charge for Christmas. The Charge can be worn on the wrist and has a watch feature. This is perfect for her to keep track of her steps. We are all friends through the FitBit app. One feature I love, is the ability to have challenges with others. There are several challenge modes including daily, weekly and weekend challenges. I love how interactive and fun it is to compete with friends.

  • Schedule a 15 minute walk in the morning. That means going to bed 15 minutes early, so you won’t be tired waking up 15 minutes early.
  • Get up from your desk and go for a 5 minute walk every other hour. This is easy to do in an office building, just pick up a notepad and pen and act like you have a meeting. Trust me no one will know. If you are at home, get up and walk around.
  • Take a 15 min walk at lunch. Go to a store or the mall and walk for 15 min. Walk the outside loop of a large grocery store or large shopping center. Walk around your building.
  • Walk for 15 minutes after dinner.

Setting Goals is Important

First thing is to set a daily goal, then work on little simple ways to achieve your step goal. If you are not at 10k steps right now, work on getting towards that goal in a few months. Try these simple ways to add more walking minutes into your day. Even if you are at home, get up and move around at least each hour. You will be amazing how easy you can work up to 10k steps in a day.
