What do you need to cook a pumpkin without an oven? You will need either a large slow cooker like this one or a pressure cooker like this one. If you don’t have an oven I highly recommend getting a slow cooker or pressure cooker.

Is canned pumpkin and pumpkin puree the same thing?

The short answer is yes. Canned pumpkin is canned pumpkin puree. You can either make it fresh from a real pumpkin or you can purchase the canned pumpkin. Both will make a great pie no matter what.

Can I freeze fresh pumpkin puree?

Yes you can freeze fresh pumpkin puree. I would recommend getting plastic baggies or containers like these to freeze your fresh pumpkin puree. See the question below to find out optimal freezing times for the freshest taste.

How long does homemade pumpkin puree last?

Fresh pumpkin puree can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for 6-12 months for the best taste. If you freeze it be sure to label the pumpkin puree and put a date on it. Then you know how long it has been in your freezer. But you will probably use it pretty quickly during the pumpkin season.

How do you prepare a pumpkin?

To prepare a pumpkin you must first wash the outside to remove any dirt from when it was sitting in the field. Then cut the pumpkin in half. Remove all the seeds and stringy things, guts. Once the pumpkin guts are removed it is ready to be cooked or placed in a slow cooker.

  • 1 Sugar Pumpkin
  • 1 cup Water

Instructions

  1. First, wash any dirt from the outside of the small sugar pumpkin.

  2. Next cut the small pumpkin in half with a large sharp knife.

  4. Place 2 cups of water in a slow cooker. Then place the whole pumpkin inside at least a 6 quart slow cooker. Place the lid on top.

  5. Cook the sugar pumpkin on high in the slow cooker for 4 hours or slow for 8 hours on high setting.

  6. One the pumpkin is cooked all the way through, scrape out all the pumpkin pulp and blend with a blender to have pumpkin puree. Be careful not to get any of the pumpkin skin.
