Classic Crispy Homemade Hash Browns Recipe

June 3, 2015 Amy 5 Comments

It is tradition in our family to make a big breakfast on the weekends. We even did this when I was younger. My dad would always make a big breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. It was a super special treat. He would often make homemade hash browns. These buttery fried potatoes were on my list of favorite breakfast food. I am so surprised how easy hashbrowns are to make. My kids just love them and with only two ingredients these are a good clean eating food. I’ll even tell you the secret to getting good crispy with this homemade hash browns recipe.

Peeling potato for hash browns

1. I recommend a really good cast iron skillet to make homemade hash browns. I absolutely love my cast iron skillet. Heat skillet over a med heat on the stove. Peel the potatoes with a sharp potato peeler.

2. How to shred potatoes for hash brown by using a cheese grater to grate the potatoes. This is the new one I bought just for this post and it is super sharp. Don’t grate your fingers. This hurts. Trust me I know I found out the hard way.

3. Make small potato patties. Try to make them a little thin, but they will still hold together. Shake a little salt and pepper over the top for taste. Even a little garlic powder is great.

4. Place a pat of butter in the skillet. Have the skillet on med high heat. Then place a potato hashbrown on top of the butter. The large 12 inch skillet can fit about three hash browns easy. Cook until the bottom of the potato patty is browned.

5. Place another pat of butter in the skillet before you flip the hash brown in the skillet. Let cook on the other side until browned. Frying on each side is how hash browns stick together. While on the other side add a little salt and pepper to taste. See this is so easy to make. Serve with eggs and bacon or sausage for a complete breakfast.
