Easy Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

January 26, 2013 Amy 11 Comments

If tacos are on your menu plan as much as they are in ours, then you use a lot of taco seasoning. You can get taco seasoning pretty cheap at the store most of the time, but it usually contains a lot of sodium and not many actual spices. Here is an easy taco seasoning mix I make.  This flavorful taco seasoning mix can be made in bulk and store in a container to use with many taco and Mexican dishes.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Taco Seasoning Recipe

Ingredients for Taco Seasoning recipe:

1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional, stay tuned I’ll tell you why)
1/4 teaspoon oregano (Mexican oregano if you can find it)
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon turmeric (optional if you have it, if not skip it)
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon salt

How to make Taco Seasoning:

1. Look in your spice cabinet and search for all these spices. This is what take so long to make this. I usually quadruple this recipe to have some on hand to use in other dishes besides tacos.

2. Measure taco seasoning ingredients in a small bowl and mix thoroughly and store in an air tight container. See the Turmeric container in the picture, I use these for my homemade seasonings.

3. Use a 1/4 cup to flavor one pound of ground beef.  Use only 3 tablespoons if you are omitting dried onions and garlic and using fresh.

I sometimes omit the garlic powder and onion powder, since I like to use fresh. We need to feed five here at times, so I will add a 1/2 to a whole onion while browning the meat. This helps stretch the meat and a great way to sneak in a veggie for dinner. All the onion does is add more flavor and will make a pound of meat turn into a pound and half easily to feed more.

I have tried two different taco seasoning recipes but I find that they don’t add the saucy-ness that the store bought ones do so I usually have to add salsa too. How much mixed seasoning do you use on your ground beef per pound? Do you add anything else to make it saucy or does the onion make it a little saucier??? This looks a little different that my seasonings so I might have to try this one too 🙂

This comes close to a 1/4 cup of seasoning. I use just a little under a 1/4 cup. The onion does make it a little saucier. Sometimes I might add some water to help release the flavors of the spices.
