Easy Homemade Whole Wheat Tortillas

What are the ingredients for flour tortillas?

You just need four simple ingredients to make tortillas whole wheat flour, oil, a little salt, and warm water. Mix them together and that is it.

How do you make tortillas from scratch?

It is so easy if you have the ingredients listed above. After you mix them together you need them for a little bit and let it rest. Then section out the dough and start rolling. If you have a tortilla roller like this one, it will make it easier.

What can I use instead of lard in tortillas?

For these whole wheat tortillas I use oil. I prefer to use olive oil since it gives these whole wheat tortillas a little more of a nutty taste. You will need some type of fat, but don’t use butter. Butter will make it flaky and not the right texture. You don’t want that.

Directions on how to make whole wheat tortillas:

pouring oil for homemade tortillas

1. Place the whole wheat flour mixture in a rounded bowl and add oil and salt. With a pastry blender just like this one,  blend until the mixture is crumbly.

2. Slowly add the warm water and keep mixing by hand until smooth about 3 to 5 minutes.

Homemade tortilla dough

3. Pinch the dough in your hands and roll the dough into a ball. Use a plate and flatten. Let the dough rest at least 15 to an hour. This is a very important step they will not be as soft if you rush this step.

4. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium high heat. Spray with cooking spray or use Misto Oil Sprayer to use my own oil.

5. On a lightly floured surface, start to roll out each circle to about 8-10 inches. These will not be perfectly round tortillas you are used to seeing at the store. It is OK, since they still taste amazing.

6. cook in the skillet for about 30 – 45 seconds per side.

Recipe Notes

If you make the tortillas thin, they maybe a little more crunchy instead of soft. Try not to roll them too thin.

You can always roll them out ahead of time. Place a piece of parchment between each tortilla, then place in a plastic bag. Take out and cook as needed.

This recipe makes 12 tortillas. I try to make a batch of tortillas on Sunday, since we have taco Tuesday in our meal plan. Tortillas can be used for many dishes or great as a flat bread to eat with any Mexican meal. Homemade enchiladas are the best. Once you try a homemade tortilla, it will be hard to eat anything else. My family LOVES me to make homemade tortillas, but I am always scared 100% whole wheat will be to wheat-y. Yours look beautiful, though. I think I will try the half pastry, half regular flour, like you did. Thanks! Pinning!

The whole wheat pastry flour is a little finer and works great for tortillas. Let me know how they turn out.

My mom used to make us homemade tortillas all the time as kids. It was my favorite thing to help with in the kitchen. Great tip to use pastry flour, I will have to try it. Pinned for later, Thanks!

    Hi there!
They look delicious and so nice. Can I make them ahead and freeze? I would like to make a whole batch and use them over the week…

Great question Lisa. I have never frozen them before. We eat them too fast. They should last a week in your fridge. I am sure you could freeze them. I would recommend allowing them to cool before freezing, so they won’t stick together.
