I am not going to be giving any profound or miraculous secret ingredients for the best homemade fabric softener ever. I will be giving you several homemade fabric softener recipes to choose from in order to help save money while doing laundry. With these homemade fabric softener recipes you will only spend pennies at the store on basic ingredients to make a bottle or two of fabric softener yourself. Instead of trying to find some on sale or the bargain brand. This is so easy you probably have most of the ingredients on hand for all of these recipes.
Homemade Fabric Softener Recipe Recipe 1
1/4 – 1/2 Cup Vinegar per load
Really, this is the only thing you need for fabric softener. It softens clothes and is a great to reduce static. Just add about 1/2 cup to the rinse cycle and you are done. This is probably the cheapest and most environmentally safe fabric softener around.
Let’s suppose you don’t want to walk around smelling like a salad all the time. Yes your clothes are clean and they don’t even have static, but your clothes smell like vinegar. That is why most people buy fabric softener, so their clothes will smell good. You can add a couple of drops of an essential oil like lavender or lemon to the vinegar and shake each time before you use it for your own salad dressing fabric softener for your clothes. You will smell great and you can experiment with different essential oils you like to find the perfect fragrance balance for you.

1.5 cups Vinegar
1 Cup Conditioner
3 Cups Water
This is a simple recipe I see all over the internet and it is really easy to do. The conditioner can add a wonderful scent to making homemade fabric softener. Simply pick a conditioner you love and use one cup and mix it with vinegar and water. With this recipe I found I had to shake up the bottle right before I used it to make sure the conditioner hasn’t all floated to the top.
What about Fabric Softener sheets?
The clothes smell great from the wash, but it is good to have some extra for the dryer to prevent static cling. Take some old rags or cut sponges and dip them in the homemade fabric softener and squeeze out the excess and toss it into the dryer for fresh smelling clothes. Yes it is just that simple to have nice smelling fabric softener sheets.

I tried making a tiny test batch (1/3rd of the volume) of the second fabric softener recipe, and used it in my dryer. I didn’t have any little rags, so I used a small sock, tightly squeezed out the excess and tossed it in, hoping for the best. It worked splendidly. No weird marks of any kind on my clothing. No static. Nice mild fragrance. Great for dealing with cat hair this time of year. It’s such a pleasure to try a homemade product that really works well. Now I’ve stashed my left over mixture in an old cool-whip container, and cut up a few small squares from an old t-shirt to use next time. Thanks so much for sharing; I really enjoyed trying this out!
I’ve been using vinegar for years. I started using them for my towels (for over 20 years), then thought why not my clothes (the past 10 years). Well my seven kids thought I lost it. Until they saw the money I was saving! It works great!
Just wondering if there are any long term negative effects to the conditioner use on your clothes? Will it build up, stain, turn u into a walking fire hazard?
I am not sure if there is any negative effects. I would think it would be the same for hair and more people’s hair would catch on fire. So far I have not heard of that being a problem.
