Easy DIY Homemade Laundry Soap

March 9, 2015 Amy 3 Comments

Making your own Homemade laundry soap is one of the easiest ways to save money. I have been making my own homemade laundry detergent for a while. This liquid recipe makes a lot of laundry detergent and lasts a long time. But I didn’t always have time to make a big batch when I ran out. I needed something quick I could whip up in a few minutes. I came up with this simple recipe and it seems to be working great.

Easy Homemade Laundry Soap

Easy DIY Homemade Laundry Soap Only 4 ingredients for this recipe!

Soap – The soap gives the detergent the cleaning power to clean the clothes. Other recommended brands to try are Fels Naptha, Zote or even a castile soap. I used Ivory, since this is what I had on hand.

Borax – Is a naturally occurring mineral and is used to act as a deodorizer and whitener in the detergent.

Washing Soda – This is specifically for washing and is not baking soda. Washing soda helps remove dirt and odors from the clothes.

Oxy Booster – This helps boost the laundry detergent to help fight stains and whitens clothes with out bleach. (optional).

Ingredients for Homemade Laundry Soap

Homemade Laundry Soap

1 cup washing soda
1 cup Borax
1 bar soap (I use Ivory)
1/4 cup Oxy booster
20 drops of essential oils for scent (lavender works great for laundry)

Directions on How to Make Homemade Laundry Soap

1. Measure all the ingredients and pour into a container. Shake the container to mix the ingredients. Really it is just that easy. This is why I love this recipe.

2. Use about two tablespoons per wash. I use the scoop that came with the oxy booster to measure out the correct amount for each load.

Homemade laundry DetergentI usually can make one batch in about five minutes. I have even made some printables for your homemade laundry soap for a cute little tag. Simple print these on card stock and put a hole punch in the top and attach to your soap. In order to give this homemade laundry soap a little boost I will drizzle a little Dawn in the load. It is easy to make a very large batch and use one box washing soda, one box Borax and 3 cups oxi booster. Then grate 6 bars of soap. Store it in containers in your laundry room to easily have on hand.

Do you have any advice for grating the soap? That seems to be the most time consuming part of making detergent.

Thanks for your question. I agree grating soap is time consuming. You could use a food processor with the grater attachment or just cut the soap in small pieces with a knife
